Issues of Natural Family Planning

**There are numerous approaches to Natural Family planning.  Many in this area have heard of the Billings method; but there are others.  This listing should not be used as a complete list of all research and info on NFP, but as a starting point.  You may want to do a search on "Natural Family Planning" and look at what is offered.

NFP New York  This site has some interesting links on theology of life and a pretty good list of resources available for the beginner or expert in NFP.

NaproTECHNOLOGY As stated in Tim Hickey's article, Opening Ode: Spreading the Gospel of Life.  Doctor T. Hilgers developed this based on "Humanae Vitae" and, as Mr. Hickey stated "Hilgers embraced its life-giving message, esp. an overlooked passage that challanged doctors and medical researchers to 'consider as their proper professional duty the task of acquiring all the knowledge needed... so as to be able to give to those married persons who consult them wise counsel...'" (Columbia, January 2007)

Institute for Reproductive Health, Georgetown University A good general description of the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family Planning.  Probably the best NFP method when used properly.

Ethical Vaccines (as reported by our Pro-Life Chair, Andrew J. Jezierski 10/30/07)
I’ve contacted Windsor/Essex Health Unit and they still do not know when they will receive Pediacel for distribution to local doctors. (PENTACEL, the current vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio and Haemophilus influenza B uses cell lines from lung tissue taken from a 14 week male Caucasian aborted for psychiatric reason from a 27 year old physically healthy woman.)

Please request your doctor to use PEDIACEL for your children DPPTT shots at age 2, 4, 6, 18mo and 4-6 year booster. Parents can check and request availability of PEDIACEL with Windsor Essex County Health Unit - 519-258-2146. http://www.wechealthunit.org/ .

Some more info on the vaccines from LifeCanada.org:

Are there any ethical alternatives available that use non-fetal cells?

  1. At the present time, there are no ethical alternatives for the rubella vaccine in Canada. This problem is compounded by the fact that the rubella vaccine is only available in combination with measles and mumps.  Alternatives are available in Europe and Japan, but have not been licensed or marketed in Canada.  Measles and mumps single dose vaccines are available in the US.
  2. All chickenpox vaccines are made with aborted fetal cell strains.  There are no ethical alternatives available world-wide.
  3. Alternative have been approved for use in Canada to Pentacel (against tetanus diphtheris, pertussis, polio and Haemophilus B), of which the polio component is made with MRC-5.  Pediacel (Sanofi Pasteur) and Infanrix (GlaxoSmithKline) are made with monkey cells and protect against the same diseases as Pentacel.  All the provinces except Quebec have confirmed they are in the process of replacing Pentacel with Pediacel in the routine immunization schedule. While the start date varies somewhat from province to province, the earliest start date is set for October, 2007. Quebec is also expected to purchase Pediacel instead of Pentacel when it secures its upcoming vaccine contact.
  4. Alternatives are available in Canada for rabies vaccine.  Rabavert, made on chick embryos is the one to ask for.
  5. Alternatives for Hepatitis A are only available in Japan and Europe.  Note that Hepatitis A vaccine is also used in combination vaccines with Hepatitis B (Twinrix), and also typhoid fever (Vivaxim).  Some of these are required for travel abroad.

What can be done to encourage governments to provide ethical alternatives?
Many parents, healthcare professionals and government officials are unaware of the issue of aborted fetal cell use in vaccines.  They need to be informed, and they need to know that many people have moral objections to using vaccines produced in such a manner.  Although ethical alternatives for some vaccines do exist, some are not licensed for use in Canada, and acquiring those will take time and continued effort. Concerned parents and physicians should contact their provincial health officials to outline their concerns and encourage them to acquire ethical alternatives for the population under their care.  Addresses and a sample letter are included on this website. http://www.lifecanada.org/html/science/Vaccines/VaccineQuestionandAnswers.html#Q12
Should parents continue to have their children vaccinated using these products?
While this is ultimately the responsibility of parents to decide, pro-life physicians do encourage continued vaccination with these products until ethical alternatives are made available.  However, if governments and pharmaceutical companies are led to believe that the public is content with products provided, no changes will be made.  Therefore, parents who continue vaccinating their children with these products, as well as those who don’t are strongly urged to let their Provincial Health Ministers, Chief Medical Officers of Health, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies know that they require alternatives.  Addresses and a sample letter are included on this website. http://www.lifecanada.org/html/science/Vaccines/index.html
Actually, the discussion on morality of using those vaccines continues among Catholic theologians and ethicists:

As Catholics we are obligated to follow directions of moral authority of our Church:
CWNews.com /LifeSiteNews.com) July 26, 2005 - Although the Pontifical Academy for Life has strongly condemned the development of vaccines from fetal tissues, the president of that Academy notes that parents may still be justified in having their children inoculated with such vaccines.
Bishop Elio Sgreccia, in a July 23 interview with Vatican Radio, clarified the position taken by the Pontifical Academy for Life, in response to an inquiry from an American pro-life group. The bishop said that pharmaceutical manufacturers have a grave moral obligation to provide vaccines that do not use fetal tissues. But parents whose children may risk serious disease without inoculation may still choose vaccination, he said.
Bishop Sgreccia said that the Vatican had sent a two-part message to the American pro-life group. "On the one hand," he said, "in a particular context such as that in the United States, it is licit to use these vaccines, because there are no others actually available." The bishop explained that parents have a serious obligation to protect their children from disease whenever possible, and in doing so they are not signaling their approval for abortion.
On the other hand, Bishop Sgreccia continued, drug manufacturers have the choice to provide vaccines that do not use fetal tissue, so their continued use of the "tainted" vaccines does involve formal cooperation in abortion. He said that government should press the pharmaceutical companies to make other vaccines available, using morally licit means such as the use of animal tissue, and Catholic families should join actively in that pressure campaign.
In a paper published in Medicine Morale , a journal published by Rome's University of the Sacred Heart, the Pontifical Academy had argued that parents might have the right to refuse vaccinations. The paper argued even more strongly that parents have an obligation-- and government an even stronger obligation-- to press for the development of vaccines that are not developed from fetal tissues.
The Vatican document-- which was made public last week by the American group, Children of God for Life-- said that different actors have different degrees of moral involvement in the use of fetal tissues. While drug manufacturers are "culpable of cooperation" in abortion, the parents who are under pressure to use vaccines have only a "very remote material cooperation" in the immoral act, the paper argues.
Even if they do accept vaccination for their children, the Vatican statement argued, parents remain obligated to press for the ethical development of other vaccines.
The statement from the Pontifical Academy for Life was approved by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

A review of the National Vaccine Information Center revealed the following, quite alarming, statistic about this unnecessary vaccine: 2,207 adverse reactions (3,779 as of October 2007) to Gardasil have been reported. Among them:

Gardasil “may be more dangerous than consumers have been led to believe,” according to one public-interest group, and an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine has also raised questions about the vaccine's effectiveness.

These are hefty risks for a vaccine that only sometimes protects against HPV, which is virtually 100 percent avoidable without a vaccine, anyway.

It’s essential to get the facts about HPV before considering a potentially dangerous vaccine. First off, of the more than 6 million cases of HPV each year, about 90 percent of them clear up on their own within two years. If you eat right, exercise and keep stress in your life under control, your immune system should be healthy enough to clear up HPV.

Secondly, the vaccine is not fool-proof. You can still get “non-vaccine” types of HPV even if you get vaccinated.

Finally, remember that HPV is a sexually transmitted disease, which means that it is nearly 100 percent avoidable by modifying lifestyle habits.

If you don’t thinks that this is about money, here is a quote from president of Merck, the producer of Gardasil, on excellent result for 3rd quarter, 2007: GARDASIL's performance has been up outstanding. In the third quarter, total Merck revenue for GARDASIL was $418 million. Year-to-date revenue exceeds $1.1 billion. Merck has distributed more than 13 million doses of the vaccine worldwide since it came to market in June of 2006.

Planned Parenthood links:

Planned Parenthood is an organization that does publicly funded abortions and is anti-life in their format.  They focus solely on a woman's right to choose what to do with her body.  The grievously sad part of this is that they have no concern for the life of the child; they seem to see it as a blob of tissue.  NOTE: Planned Parenthood of Toronto gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of  the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation. With $100  million in annual funding from the province's charitable gaming  intiative, the Foundation provides grants to eligible charitable and  not-for-profit organizations in the arts, culture, sports,  recreation, environment and social service sectors. WE are supporting these abortions.
Also, that the United Way supports Planned Parenthood

Check this out:  "Does abortion increase risk of breast cancer? A recent billboard  and transit ad campaign sponsored by anti-abortion groups claims that  breast cancer risk substantially increases if a woman has an abortion  or defers pregnancy to her 30s. This claim is false, and relies on  outdated, poorly designed studies and manipulated statistics to scare  women.    Check the real facts here
